Cape Fear Military Academy Encyclopedia

Under the direction of Raleigh E. Colston and with 76 cadets, the Cape Fear Military Academy began operation on October 12, 1868.  The Cape Fear Military Academy cadets were disciplined and earned a good reputation in the Wilmington community. Cadets participated in many civic events during the mid-to-late 1800s.

Robert Fredrick Hoke (1837-1912) Encyclopedia

According to Captain Samuel A. Ashe, North Carolina legislator and historian,  “Hoke was Lee’s best general and the most distinguished soldier in North Carolina.” The Confederate service of Robert Fredrick Hoke, a Lincolnton native, earned him the title “the Stonewall of Fork Road” and the respect of many North Carolinians.

Thomas Fentriss Toon (1840-1902) Encyclopedia

Born on June 10, 1840 in Columbus County, Thomas Fentress Toon was a farmer prior to attending Wake Forest College, serving as a Confederate general, and later as the first North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction.
