Jefferson Davis Bulla

During his long life (almost 103 years), Dr. Jefferson Davis Bulla practiced medicine for 77 years.  From his Hillsville home (Randolph County), Bulla treated patients.   Throughout the county, he was known for making house calls (24 hours a day) and for being a generous man: according to historian/journalist L. Barron Mills, the doctor never turned “away a patient who could not afford payment.”  After graduating from medical school in 1888, Bulla started his practice.  It is estimated that he delivered approximately 5,000 babies.  According to Mills, Bulla became the “best-known” physician in Randolph County.
